Cancer-fighting CAR T cells show promising results for hard-to-treat tumours

A recent clinical trial published in Nature has demonstrated promising results for CAR T-cell therapy in treating solid tumours, specifically advanced gastric and gastro-oesophageal junction cancers. The experimental therapy, satricabtagene autoleucel (satri-cel), was administrered as a last resort in the patients included in this phase II trial, all of whom had previously undergone at least two unsuccessful treatments and had tumors expressing the CLDN18.2 protein. Results showed that more patients treated with satri-cel responded positively vs. control group. These patients lived longer as well and and have a lowers risk of death than those receiving standard card. These findings suggest that CAR T-cell therapy, previously effective mainly against blood cancers, may also be beneficial for certain solid tumours.
